joy wouldn't be special if it wasn't for pain

Few weeks back, a friend of mine was playing a song by 50 cent on his phone titled, “many men.” It got to a line where he said, “sunny days wouldn’t be special, if it wasn’t for rain…, joy wouldn’t feel so good, if it wasn’t for pain…” now, this got be wondering, could there be any truth to this, or maybe it’s some rapper trying to rhythm. Then I realize that in every success, every big break through, there is a certain kind of struggle story to it.

Kelvin is a 17 years old teenage boy, who for quite some time wanted a driver’s license. Few weeks before his driving test, he has been taking driving lessons and has been reading on several traffic signs and laws. So the glorious day arrived, he got into the car with his instructor and headed off to commence with the test. At the end of the test, kelvin was told he failed and won’t be issued any license. He went home sad – who wouldn’t?

Despite failing the driving test, kelvin refused to be discouraged but instead, decided to work even harder to get another shot at it. Failure couldn’t hold him back from his goal; in fact, it propelled him to go the extra mile. Failure is part of life, and it’s this same failure that makes us grow, improve and enjoy our success even more when we make it. The day for his second trial came and this time he passed, he went home beaming from ear to ear.

Pain gives us a sense of appreciation, makes us value more what we achieved. What if kelvin had gotten his driver’s license in a single trial, wouldn’t he be happy? No one can dispute the fact of him being happy, but chances are he would be reckless on the road because he believes if his license is taken away, he can always get another in a single trial. Pain makes joy boundless, pain makes us as humans appreciate life the more, pain makes joy what it is and without pain, joy would mean nothing at all.
